Hall of Justice members (judges) control the ruins, people, and concrete on the “former” east coast. Our Judge Dredd is a veteran judge and is training a rookie in this installment. This is the story, and it begins after a brief car chase to set the tone of the movie.
The judges end up at the Peach Trees complex and encounter the MaMa gang. These are the folks not to be crossed. The drug the judges encounter and battle at the complex is called Slowmo. It drops the time to 1% of normal speed for extended enjoyment. Between that and violence, the judges have their hands full.
The mind games and abilities of the rookie judge (as a mutant mind reader) bring much depth to the movie. The violence and slow motion blood and death scenes in 3D are not bad, but having not seen the 2D version, a comparison can’t be made.
The movie was surprisingly well laid out and enjoyable. There is plenty of opportunity for part two. Despite the narrow focus of the film, it was engaging and entertaining. I would recommend the film for a simple good time at the movies, but if you want more than a simple film, and want to toss in emotion with the mix and some humor, see End of Watch instead. Either film is a good deal.
