Time travel, in the future of course, is illegal. The socially deviant do it anyway to take out the scum of the future, for a fee. Sometimes when a looper’s contract is expired, those in power have to close the loop, and bring the looper’s future self into a killing contract with the young looper, to be their next victim. This is called closing the loop. They get a huge payday and to enjoy the shortened future they know know they have. This is a story of Joseph Gordon-Levitt attempting to, or, perhaps closing the loop himself with his future self, as Bruce Willis.
There is simultaneous story telling that bounces back and forth. We have seen this plenty before in films especially along these lines. We do get to enjoy good actors, who have relatively limited roles which are predominately mute in the beginning. There is not much to them, as the scenes bounce back and forth and are filled primarily with action.
Jeff Daniels, yes, Jeff Daniels is the king pin “Rainmaker” organizing all the “bounties” and running the show. There are a few more supporting roles introduced that really dot have much relevance and whose characters are not well developed or defined. This was a struggling point for the writers apparently. The main characters were developed late in the film.
The cat and mouse game introduces a lot of crazy action and entertainment, but is also had to be butchered in editing for time, even to leave the film at two hours long. Only in the last hour or so do we begin to meet some of the characters as they are allowed to develop.
The young boy in the movie is the next Haley Joel Osment, Dakota Fanning, or Macauley Caulkin type actor. His performance was the most powerful in the film, as he was written to be powerful. His actual performance was fantastic for such a youngster.
The story was finally given a fairly standard twist and was ended well. There is room for a second installment, like with an X-men or Bourne movie. Go see it if you on the fence about it. You will walk out satisfied.
